Snow Days

Hello all!

It's been a great week with plenty of sun and some exciting ice and snow to enjoy. Last week we continued talking about migration and played at being migrating flocks with the play silks, as you can see in some of the photos below. We talked about and read many wonderful books about other animals aside from birds that migrate too, such as whales, turtles, monarch butterflies, reindeer, elk and salmon. The kids did some amazing guided imagery journeys as migrating animals.

We had some great nature sightings, including a bald eagle, a varied thrush, owl pellets, and a falling squirrel (it was ok!). That last one was a little intense, but now we know that even squirrels do fall from branches once in a while. We just happened to be there to see one do it up at very close range, and there was a little freaking out on everyone's part, most especially the squirrel.

Until the middle of February we will be doing some inner work and talking, reading, making art and playing games about friends and friendship; one of the great joys of life for 3 and 4 year olds and beyond. This unit will culminate with our all school potluck on the 15th. I encourage everyone to bring valentines for all the school friends.

On the morning of Friday the 15th we will finish our friends unit and begin our birds unit with a trip to the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. Everyone is invited to come, bringing family and siblings if you like, and we will plan on meeting at the garden at 10:30 and staying until 12:00. As tempting as it is, they do officially request that visitors not feed the ducks. After this field trip we will head back to the school and have our potluck lunch together at 12:30.
